Syrian army hits rebels, Riyadh accuses Assad of genocide

By Oliver Holmes

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syria's military pounded rebel bastions in Damascus on Tuesday and Saudi Arabia demanded an arms embargo on what it called President Bashar al-Assad's genocidal and illegitimate regime.

Attacking Iran, Russia and Lebanon's Hezbollah for supporting Assad, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal said the kingdom could not be silent and called for arms to be supplied to Syrian rebels, now militarily on the back foot.

"Syria is facing a double-edged attack, it is facing genocide by the government and an invasion from outside the government, and ... a massive flow of weapons to aid and abet that invasion and that genocide. This must end," he told a news conference with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in Jeddah.

"The kingdom calls for issuing an unequivocal international resolution to halt the provision of arms to the Syrian regime and states the illegitimacy of the regime," Prince Saud said.

In Damascus, Assad's gunners fired mortars and artillery at Zamalka and Irbin, just east of the government-held city centre, in an assault backed by air strikes, opposition activists said.

Mostly Sunni Muslim rebels who grabbed footholds in Damascus nearly a year ago now say they face a grinding advance by the Syrian military, buoyed by support from Assad's regional Shi'ite allies, notably Iranian-backed Hezbollah fighters on the ground.

If the insurgents are driven from the capital's eastern suburbs, they would lose arms supply routes and suffer a severe blow in their drive to end four decades of Assad family rule.

The Saudi minister's strongly worded remarks reinforced signs that the Syrian war is entangling much of the Middle East.

Security in neighboring Iraq and Lebanon, where the conflict has aggravated Sunni-Shi'ite tensions, has crumbled.

Suicide bombers killed eight people north of Baghdad on Tuesday, a day after 39 people died when 10 car bombs exploded in the capital. Violence has spiraled in Iraq since April.

"GETTING OUT OF HAND"

In Lebanon, clashes between the Lebanese army and gunmen led by a fiercely anti-Hezbollah Sunni cleric engulfed the southern port of Sidon on Sunday. At least 40 people were killed, including 18 soldiers, security sources said.

Sectarian hatred has even flared in Sunni-majority Egypt, where a crowd attacked and killed five Shi'ites on Sunday.

Lakhdar Brahimi, the U.N.-Arab League mediator, urged the United States and Russia to help "contain this situation that is getting out of hand, not only in Syria but also in the region".

Speaking in Geneva before preparatory talks with U.S. and Russian officials, he said he doubted that a Syria peace conference proposed by Moscow and Washington could take place next month, citing disarray among Assad's political opponents.

More than 93,000 people have been killed in Syria since peaceful protests erupted in March 2011. Assad's violent response helped generate what is now a civil war that has driven nearly 1.7 million refugees into neighboring countries.

Outgunned rebels are looking to Western and Arab nations to help them to reverse Assad's battlefield gains of the last few weeks. But although the United States announced unspecified military aid this month, it is unclear whether this can shift the balance against the Syrian leader and his allies.

Kerry wants to ensure that aid to the rebels is properly coordinated, in part out of concern that weapons could end up in the hands of Islamist militants who are prominent in their ranks.

"Our goal is very clear, we cannot let this be a wider war, we cannot let this contribute to more bloodshed and prolongation of the agony of the people of Syria," he said.

Saudi Arabia, a Sunni state which views Shi'ite Iran as its arch-rival, has increased aid to Syrian rebels in recent months, supplying anti-aircraft missiles among other weapons.

Prince Saud denounced foreign involvement in Syria "by Hezbollah and other militias supported by the forces of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard", and also took a swipe at Moscow.

"There is no logic that allows Russia to publicly arm the Syrian regime and the foreign forces that support it."

May Home Sales: Homewood Sales on the Rise - Real Estate ...

Year-over-year, Homewood saw a boost in the number of homes sold during the month of May. Median home prices decreased, however, according to the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors.

The 33 single, detached homes sold in Homewood during May 2013 represented a 200-percent increase?over May 2012, when 11 homes were sold, according to the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors (MORe).

There were?19 homes sold in?Homewood?during April.

Homewood median home prices, however, dropped a bit from May 2012, from $131,000 to $130,000.

Sales of single-family, detached homes in suburban Chicago increased 29.1 percent in May 2013 compared with the same period a year ago, MORe reported. Sales in the 200 communities MORe gathers information on in DuPage, Lake and suburban Cook counties?experienced notable sales gains last month.

Sales momentum is expected to continue in those communities, as the number of detached homes under contract in May grew by 45 percent in those same communities, according to MORe.

Competition in the housing market is going to continue as the market works through a backlog of distressed properties, said Tonya Corder, president of MORe and managing broker of Keller Williams Preferred Realty in Orland Park.

?Buyers need to come in aggressively with their first price, especially on moderately priced homes in good condition,? Corder said ?We are seeing multiple offers and people writing contracts on properties the day they come onto the market. ... There is a buzz going on in real estate right now. People want to take advantage of this market.?

Lotus Developing 200 BHP C-01 Motorcycle - MotorBeam

Lotus C-01 Motorcycle

What does Lotus remind us of? It is our national flower. It is also a car manufacturer based in Norfolk, UK and has a Formula one team, which borrows engines from Renault for racing. Lotus on the other hand is known for many adventures on four wheels. Lotus car manufacturers are known for making the best chassis in the world. They have tuned numerous cars for various manufacturers. To give you an example, they are involved in making the chassis for the famed Nissan GT-R. Albeit, Lotus makes cars for themselves in a very unusual way.

Lotus takes flagship engines from reliable manufacturers like Honda and Toyota and supercharges them to give it the extra punch. Later on, they plonk the engines in the middle of their extremely light and stiff sports cars and make them go around corners exactly like you dreamed off, flat, quick and with tones of grip. Lotus has made its appearance like background music in a movie when it comes to their Indian ventures. Long ago, Lotus stepped in and tuned the chassis on the Mahindra Scorpio (no one is perfect at first).

Not so long ago, Lotus stepped in and tuned Force Motors? SUV to make it better and less floppy given the fact it is a barge. Moreover, very recently the Sail twins from Chevrolet got their chassis tuned from Lotus. Chevrolet went ahead and biased the suspension towards ride quality over dynamics. The reason we mentioned all the ventures to make you realize that Lotus is not unknown and because they are about to enter a highly competitive and established segment in the automotive world, Motorcycles!

Lotus has announced that they will be entering the motorcycle market with a 200 BHP motorcycle. Yes! That is right, they are tapping into the niche market of hyper bikes. Lotus says this bike will be the best looker on the road and engineers will focus on design, ergonomics and high-end technologies. The bike is code named C-01. The venture is being commenced with partnership with Kodewa German auto racing team, car designer Daniel Simon and the Holzer group.

Daniel Simon is no ordinary man. He is responsible for carving out Bugatti cars and has designed the world famous Tron motorcycle for Disney in 2010. So finally, we can expect Tron styled motorcycle? Not so sure, but it may end up borrowing some cues from it. The motorcycle will be developed with Formula One experience and technologies. Carbon fiber, titanium and aerospace steel is bound to be used for this challenging venture. All the latest equipment is on disposal for making the Lotus C-01 motorcycle reliable with equipment and attention to detail making sure that it rolls out without any production faults.

Given the rich past of Lotus when it comes to design and quality, we just hope the motorcycle turns out with Lotuses core beliefs. Light, dynamic, fast and immense fun. The C-01 could be a game changer for Lotus and may get the cash registers ringing again because the car manufacturing business is a bit cold given the market scenario. Given the fact that the hyper bike market is dominated by Japanese and single European manufacturer BMW, we wish Lotus all the best for their venture and welcome them to the world of two wheels.

Ohio air show resumes with moment of silence after deadly stunt

By Kim Palmer

Cleveland (Reuters) - An Ohio air show resumed on Sunday with a moment of silence for a pilot and a stunt woman killed during a wing-walking trick a day earlier when their biplane crashed and burst into flames.

Organizers of the Vectren Dayton Air Show in Dayton honored stuntwoman Jane Wicker and her pilot, Charlie Schwenker, who died when their Boeing Stearman crashed on Saturday while doing aerobatics at the show.

Video of the incident replayed on television and the Internet showed that at the time of the crash, the duo appeared to have been executing a stunt in which the vintage plane flips as Wicker is out on one of its wings.

The plane crashed into a grassy area before Schwenker could pull out of the stunt.

"There was a significant explosion. There was smoke and fire. The announcers had the kids look away," said Michael Emoff, chairman of the 39th annual show. "The weather was fine. Clearly something went wrong."

No one on the ground was injured, organizers said.

Wicker began her career in 1989 as a pilot and had recently returned to wing walking after an injury to her lung and spleen. Unlike most wing walkers, she did not use a safety line.

Wicker announced in May she planned to marry pilot Rock Skowbo at an air show in 2014. The ceremony was to take place while the two were in flight, according to her website, wingwalkwedding.com.

Schwenker started flying sailplanes in 1975, and competition aerobatics in 1990, according to Flyingcircusairshow.com.

Saturday's incident was the latest in a string of deadly air show accidents in recent years - including one at Dayton six years ago - that have raised questions about the safety of such events.

John Cudahy, president of the International Council of Air Shows trade group, said such crashes are becoming less common but still happen twice per year on average.

The Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board and local authorities were investigating the cause of the crash.

At a Sunday afternoon press conference, Jason Aquilera, investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board, said the board would issue a report at the end of the week with the "facts of the case" but cautioned the investigation could take six months to a year to complete.

"We go in with an open mind. Right now there is nothing to rule out and everything is on the table," Aquilera said.

6 Most In-Demand Home-Based Online Businesses | Content for ...

Author: Brian Blogs | Total views: 170 Comments: 0
Word Count: 714 Date:

The home-based business has become extremely popular within the past few years, it is the online business industry. There are a lot of internet businesses flourishing nowadays but here are 6 of the most in-demand:

1. Online Retail Stores

Popularized by auction sites Ebay, Craigslist and Amazon, online retail stores have become a hit most especially to the working class. Most people of today are so busy with school, work and various other activities that the once enjoyable weekly shopping sprees have become a hassling monthly activity. People simply don't have that much time anymore.

Fortunately, with the help of social networking sites, e-commerce has managed to leap on top. From clothes, gadgetries, to furniture pieces - all can be bought just with a few mouse clicks. People are simply drawn into the concept of shopping within the comforts of their home.

2. Translation Services

The demand for translation services is continuously growing over time as well. This can be accounted to the fact that a lot of countries are now employing a global approach for more opportunities. Businesses, most specifically, would want to expand in other countries, so they will need translators for their marketing materials or websites.

Relatively, ESL (English as a Second Language) lessons are being sought out by non-English speaking individuals. These are most popular among students who are looking into studying in other countries.

3. Blogging and SEO Writing

Bloggers typically make money by posting updates or writing on their websites or blogs. Topics may be as wide-range as product reviews, service advertisements and how-to's. Revenues will come through advertisements put on the site. Other bloggers make money through affiliate banners.

There also rests a lot of opportunities in SEO writing. With the growing popularity of the internet, businesses are starting to invest in online advertising, demanding short, content-light and keyword-rich articles that rank them high in search engines. SEO writing is perfect for beginning writers since speed, and not the skill, is considered of more essence.

4. Online Travel Agencies

Online travel agencies work differently than the traditional agencies operating in office settings. While traditional agencies rely on agents for great deals matching client requirements, online agencies count on automated searches for possible deals.

There are two advantages that set online agencies apart from the traditional types. One is efficiency. Clients are now able to book for trips without leaving their homes. The other is immediate access. Travelers need not wait too long for searches or hotel confirmations anymore. Booking trips has now been made easier, needing just several mouse clicks.

5. IT Security Consulting

The field of IT Security gets the most attention when huge companies such as The New York Times become victims of hacking. It's not easy becoming an IT security consultant since expert skills is required, but the work is guaranteed to be rewarding.

More opportunities are also at bay with the increased popularity of web businesses and need for consumer protection over the internet. The industry is currently growing by a margin of 10% annually and is projected to grow 8.8% in sales throughout 2013.

6. Social Network Game Development

A lot of young teens now spend most of their time on social media. With the rapid adaptation of devices like tablets and smartphones, it is expected that more will be increasing the hours they spend on the internet. Playing games sits on top of what these young consumers do on the internet.

Games such as the Simms, Farmville, Pet Society and Cityville are among the few most popular social media games. They are part of what brought the industry to an astonishing annual growth of 184% for the past 5 years. At this year's end, sales are projected to hit $6 billion, growing another 32%.

Whichever business opportunity you take on, it is not unlikely for you to get roped into something that leaves minimum profit but maximum hassle. Reality is, there are numerous shady characters lurking on the internet who don't want to help you succeed, but just want their money. So always be careful with the types of ventures you decide to take.

Google ordered to delete 'Street View' data in Britain

British data watchdog group orders Google to delete personal data on the company's Street View project.?

Britain's data regulator Friday ordered Internet giant?Google?to delete personal data scooped up in its?Street?View?project ? or face a contempt of court action.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The Information Commissioner's Office served?Google?Inc. with an enforcement notice, giving it 35 days to kill material captured in the project that featured camera-toting vehicles shooting images of the world's?streets.

To make sense of the pictures,?Google?had to be able to place precisely where the properties being photographed were located. Using a computer program, the vehicles taking the images used local Wi-Fi outlets to place the properties, and in doing so, collected snippets of data from the Wi-Fi networks.

The disclosure angered Internet users when it was first revealed in 2010, and Britain was one of several countries that launched inquiries. But it accepted?Google's?explanation that it had destroyed the material.

But last year,?Google?acknowledged that a handful of the discs had been discovered and the regulator promptly re-opened the investigation. US authorities raised concerns about the engineer who created the software.

However, investigators in Britain concluded there wasn't enough evidence on a corporate level to prove thatGoogle?had intended to collect personal data, and stopped short of imposing a penalty. In the United States, it paid a $7 million fine to settle a multistate investigation.

"The early days of?Google?Street?View?should be seen as an example of what can go wrong if technology companies fail to understand how their products are using personal information," Stephen Eckersley, the office's head of enforcement said in a statement.

The data regulator said the breach would have been worse had the data been disseminated.?Google?has insisted it was never examined.

Google?promised to comply with the order.

"We work hard to get privacy right at?Google," the company said in a statement. "But in this case we didn't, which is why we quickly tightened up our systems to address the issue. The project leaders never wanted this data, and didn't use it or even look at it."

The enforcement notice adds to the growing unease in Europe about whether?Google?was taking privacy concerns too lightly. France on Thursday gave the Internet search engine three months to be more upfront about the data it collects from users ? or be fined. Other European data watchdogs are also concerned.

Putin warns on arming Syrian rebels as conflict widens

By Alexei Anishchuk and Louis Charbonneau

ST PETERSBURG, Russia/UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin cautioned the West on Friday against arming Syrian rebel forces, which he said included "terrorist" groups, and warned that a swift exit by President Bashar al-Assad risked creating a dangerous power vacuum.

"If the United States ... recognizes one of the key Syrian opposition organizations, al-Nusra, as terrorist ... how can one deliver arms to those opposition members?" Putin told a panel with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. "Where will they end up? What role will they play?"

Putin defended his own country's arm sales to the embattled Syrian government as "entirely legal, repeating Russia's position that outsiders should not determine the fate of Assad and Syria.

"If Assad goes today, a political vacuum emerges - who will fill it?" Putin said at a later news conference with Merkel. "Maybe those terrorist organizations. Nobody wants this - but how can it be avoided? After all, they are armed and aggressive."

The only solution, he said, was an international peace conference that Russia and the United States are seeking to convene.

A U.N. human rights investigator warned on Friday that an increased flow of arms to Syria's government and rebel forces would likely result in increased war crimes in a two-year civil war that has killed some 93,000 people.

"States who provide arms have responsibilities in terms of the eventual use of those arms to commit ... war crimes or crimes against humanity," said Paulo Pinheiro, chairman of a U.N. commission of inquiry on rights violations in Syria.

With Russia and Iran arming Assad's forces, and Lebanon's Hezbollah fighters joining the war on his behalf, Western powers have agreed to step up aid to the mainly Sunni rebels.

U.S. President Barack Obama, citing the Syrian government's alleged use of chemical weapons, decided last week to provide military aid to rebels fighting to overthrow Assad.

Obama said on Friday the United States was leaving about 700 combat-equipped troops in Jordan after a training exercise there, at the request of Amman. The United States previously decided to leave Patriot missiles and warplanes in the country.

Jordan fears a spillover of the Syrian war into its territory, where an estimated half million Syrian refugees have fled to escape the bloodshed.

With both countries keeping an eye on the war, Obama told Congress in a letter that the troops would remain until the security situation became such that they were no longer needed.

The European Union lifted its arms embargo on Syria last month. Britain and France have spoken in favor of potentially arming the rebels, but have not yet taken any decisions.

Western powers had been reluctant in the past to arm the rebels because of concerns about the rising strength of Sunni Islamist insurgents who have pledged loyalty to al Qaeda.

France sent 16 tonnes (1 tonne = 1.102 tons) of medical aid to northern Syria on Friday, including antidotes for nerve agents, as rebels prepared to face an assault on the city of Aleppo by Assad's forces.

GROWING MIDDLE EAST DIVIDE

A U.N. spokeswoman said senior U.S. and Russian officials would meet with the international mediator on Syria in Geneva on Tuesday to discuss a peace conference.

An international peace conference is not expected to occur before August after G8 leaders clashed with Russia over the nature of a transitional government.

Foreign ministers of the Friends of Syria group of nations, which backs the opposition, will meet in Qatar on Saturday to discuss how to help the rebel Free Syrian Army defend the northern city of Aleppo.

The insurgents have suffered a recent series of battlefield setbacks and are besieged on the outskirts of Damascus by advancing government forces, who have begun to regain the upper hand.

Two years of fighting have dragged Syria's neighbors into a deadly confrontation between Shi'ite Iran supporting Assad, whose Alawite sect derives from Shi'ite Islam, and Sunni Arab Gulf nations backing the rebels.

In Beirut, the Lebanese army sealed off the parliamentary district on Friday and threatened stern action against violence after a night of unrest triggered by the Syrian war and political paralysis at home. The fighting in Syria has driven half a million Syrian refugees into Lebanon.

Sectarian violence has intensified in Lebanon because of the Syrian conflict across the border, where Lebanon's Shi'ite militia Hezbollah and Lebanese Sunni gunmen have joined opposing sides of the war.

A Cabinet minister in Iraq's Shi'ite-led government said on Friday that thousands of Shi'ite Muslims from Iraq and beyond would take up arms against Sunni al Qaeda 'savages" if fellow Shi'ites or their shrines came under further attack.

Hadi al-Amiri, Iraq's transport minister, told Reuters it would be impossible to "sit idle while the Shi'ites are being attacked," while the United States and Western allies arm and finance the mainly Sunni rebels.

Spanish police arrested eight people on Friday in Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta on suspicion of recruiting fighters for a branch of al Qaeda in Syria.

How Messy Is Your Computer's Desktop?

How Messy Is Your Computer's Desktop?

We all aspire to a certain amount of digital desktop cleanliness, but I think rather few of us actually keep up on it. As the days go by, the clutter builds bit by bit, and it's just irritating enough to be unpleasant, but not a big enough deal to actually clean up.

City centers around Brazil were still smoldering on Friday after 1 million protesters took to the streets amid growing calls on social media for a general strike next week.

While most protesters were peaceful, some small groups clashed violently with police, who responded in some cases with tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets.

The demonstrations began as an outcry against a 10-cent hike in bus and subway fares in Brazil's largest cities, but have continued even after announcements that the increases would be rescinded. Protesters have expressed frustration with corruption and what they say are high taxes and poor public services. They've demanded everything from education reforms to free bus fares while denouncing the billions of public dollars spent on stadiums before the World Cup and the Olympics.

Brazil will host the 2014 World Cup, but protesters say that the billions now spent on soccer stadiums would be better used for education, health and public safety.

President Dilma Rousseff has faced sharp criticism in Brazil's media for what many have called her lack of leadership, and called a Friday meeting with her Cabinet morning to discuss the matter.

Here's a gallery of images from the past week of protests.

3 Stocks To Keep You Out Of The Sun - Seeking Alpha

Summer is here; well it is technically here even though the other day Chicago saw a high of 57. But cool beginnings have a way of becoming warm endings, and there will undoubtedly be a few super-hot sunny days.

Most articles like this want to tout stocks that will sizzle in the summer time, like theme parks or golf equipment stocks. I want to keep you from getting burned in the sun... literally.

The Cool Comfort of the Cinema

One way to hide from the sun is to take in a matinee. The movie theater is always cranking the AC, and I haven't seen any outdoor movie theaters lately. So my first pick is LionsGate (LGF), as its movies are bound to excite and thrill and entertain.

Opening on July 3, 2013, is "Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain" a stand-up comedy movie featuring the star of the BET hit "Real Husbands of Hollywood." Some quick research shows Kevin Hart's last stand up movie grossed $7.7M and that was good enough for 7th place on the all-time list of stand-up comedy movies. The Eddie Murphy classic "Raw" was tops with $50.5M.

Beyond that movie there will be others, but investors will certainly want to own this stock ahead of the November releases of "Ender's Game" and "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire." Those will be blockbusters of immense proportion.

From a financial perspective, LGF is coming of a great FY2013; 70% top line growth was complemented by 286% earnings growth. Looking forward, earnings growth of 20% in FY2014 and 29% in FY15 are 600 and 400 basis points higher than the expected earnings growth for the industry.

Estimates have recently ticked higher for LGF, but not enough to move the stock from a Zacks Rank No. 3 (Hold) to a higher rank. FY2014 estimates at $1.33 in May but they inched up a penny to $1.34 in June. Similarly, FY2015 also moved the same amount to $1.74. As more analysts increase their earnings per share estimates, it will become more likely that this stock receives a higher Zacks Rank.

Sitting In The Shade

In keeping with my avoidance of the sun theme, my next stock is going to be a bit of a stretch. One of the most basic ways to avoid the sun is to sit under a tree. This pick is a smart one, its WisdomTree (WETF).

This issuer of Exchange Traded Funds has a lot of things going for it like the super popular DXJ ETF that allows investors to gain exposure to Nikkei and other Asian exporters and at the same time hedges the currency. While the first half of the year was nothing short of gangbusters for that ETF, the recent correction has given investors a more attractive entry point.

Whenever I see a story about WETF I am amazed that the idea of the company being bought out is never addressed. I see WETF as a great target for companies like BlackRock (BLK) and other investment managers. The M&A premium on this stock is almost nonexistent, despite its 32x forward PE compared to 14x industry average. A big reason for the heavy premium on forward PE is that the 18.7% net margin that WETF sports compared to an industry average of 7.6%.

A Zacks Rank No. 3 (Hold) could bump higher if the most recent slip in estimates gets reversed. From January through May, WETF saw its Zacks Consensus Estimate increase in each month, moving from $0.27 to $0.38 in May. The same could be said of 2014 estimates as they rose from $0.29 to $0.53.

Where the Sun Doesn't Shine

With domestic indices down around 1.6% as I write this and European markets down around 2% overnight there is definitely a sense of panic in the markets. Hopefully today's trading will not lead to more business for Carriage Services (CSV).

I am pretty sure the sun will never shine again on those that eventually get "serviced" by CSV. The funeral and death care services company is getting hammered today after Ben Bernanke shook markets by talking of tapering the paper. The intraday move lower of 8% seems dramatically out of character for a conservative business that is seeing nothing but slow and steady growth.

Recent M&A in the sector has investors taking a second look at this company and other upstarts in the industry like eFuneral, a Cleveland Ohio based that helps consumers choose a funeral service provider.

CSV is trading in line with most of the metrics that investors use to judge valuation. The lone standout is the price to book multiple of 2.4x with the industry trading at almost double that at 4.7x. CSV is expected to see topline growth of 10% this year, while the industry is looking for 1.4%. The outperformance flows through the income statement with CSV expected to show 31% EPS growth compared to 9.5% for the industry.

There's A Little Black Spot on the Sun Today

Posting an investment idea on June 20, 2013, is a difficult task as the market reacts to the statements from the Fed and the impending end of QE3. Some perspective is always something investors seem to have and traders utterly lack. Some of these stocks, like WETF are acting like Godzilla has been sighted just north of Tokyo, which is a totally unconfirmed rumor.

In these times of market corrections, know that panic and fear will cause poor long term investment decisions. With that said, make sure you wear SPF 15 or more in the sun this summer.

Researchers Have Found a Way To Cram 1,000 Gigabytes Onto a Single DVD

Researchers Have Found a Way To Cram 1,000 Gigabytes Onto a Single DVD

Now that its bigger brother Blu-ray has stolen the spotlight, paltry 4.7 GB DVDs have slowly started to fade into obscurity. But could they be poised for a comeback? A trio of Chinese scientists have discovered a breakthrough process that could, at least in theory, allow a DVD to store a whopping 1,000 GB?or a full petabyt?of data. Suck on that, Blu-ray.

The exact science and technology behind the discovery is detailed in this paper, but here's the gist of it in layman's terms. The storage capacity of a DVD is limited by the size of the laser beam burning the small pits that represent the streams of data. Blu-ray increased this capacity by switching to even smaller blue lasers, but the storage capacity of that technology maxed out as well.

You see, back in 1873, a German physicist named Ernst Abbe found that a beam of light focused through a lens could not be any smaller than half of the light's wavelength. And for visible light, which is used to burn digital media discs, that's around 500 nanometers. So instead of breaking that law, the researchers found a way to work around it using two beams of light that cancel each other out. And by ensuring the beams don't completely overlap, a much smaller beam can be created to burn even smaller pits on a disc, massively increasing its capacity.

Researchers Have Found a Way To Cram 1,000 Gigabytes Onto a Single DVD

There's a still a lot to be perfected before this technology could reach consumers. Like how these incredibly tiny pits of data can be actually be read after they're created. And since writing 1,000 GBs of data would take forever, developing faster ways to burn discs will also be necessary before consumers are ready to adopt the new technology. But the prospect of DVDs and Blu-rays taking a quantum leap in storage capacity is still incredibly exciting. [Nature Communications via The Conversation via Slashdot]
