The Maestro Of Tamil Film Audio Industry

Ilayaraja is a popular composer of film music in the South Indian Cinema industry right from the late 1970s. Even though, he has composed tunes for movies in different Indian languages like Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam and Telugu, he is known for his prominent hits for the Tamil film Music Industry. He gained popularity in the industry mainly because he acted as a trend-setter by integrating folk lyricism and also by introducing broader western musical sensibilities into the South Indian Musical mainstream. He has several accolades and awards in his favor for the best background score and soothing harmony notes composed by him.

The Trinity College of Music, London awarded him a gold medal in classical guitar in the year 1993. He also holds the pride of being the first Asian to score a full symphony performed in London. He has a large group of fans in South India and even in North India as well. Due to the search made for his compositions in the search engines, there are many websites that feature his hits alone. In addition to these websites, most of the music websites have a web page named 'Ilayaraja hits', with a wide collection of his ever- green compositions.

Like Ilayaraja hits, compositions of A.R. Rahman, who is another world-known music composer from Tamil film industry also has great fans. Some movies get popular because of the artists in the film, while some of them get popular because of the director. In Tamil film industry, some movies become popular mainly because of the fact that the songs for the film was composed by the best music director like A.R. Rahman. One such film that has raised great expectations among people is 'Kadal'. This film, which is directed by the popular film director Mr. Mani Rathnam, had its album release recently. Immediately after the release, many people began to search for 'Kadal review' just because of the great expectation as the songs were composed by the world popular music director Mr. A.R. Rahman.

Many enthusiasts and great fans of this music director written their review on the website from where they heard the songs of the album first. When reading the 'Kadal review', it is found that most of the people liked the score, but some did not like as well. Fear of assassinations haunt Egypt opposition

CAIRO (AP) ? Watching the events in Tunisia, where a leading anti-Islamist politician was shot to death this past week, members of Egypt's liberal opposition are fearfully asking: Could it happen here too?

Their fears of a renegade Islamist attack on any of the top opposition leaders have been hiked by religious edicts issued by hardline clerics on TV saying they must be killed. But even before those edicts, activists have been worried by signs they say show that ruling Islamists are starting to target their ranks ? disappearances of activists from protests, telephone death threats, warnings from security officials.

Some in the opposition say there's no sure proof of a campaign, just worrisome patterns. But the fears point to how agitated the atmosphere has become in Egypt, with tempers hiked on both sides. The mainly liberal and secular opposition accuses Islamist President Mohammed Morsi of unleashing security forces to crush their protests against him. In turn, many Islamist backers of the president are convinced that the opposition is trying to topple a democratically elected leader by force.

In that environment, an assassination against a top opposition figure like that of Tunisia's Chokri Belaid could be explosive.

Authorities appear to recognize the potential danger. The government increased security at the homes of Egypt's top opposition figures, including Mohamed ElBaradei, a senior figure in the National Salvation Front. On Saturday, there was a startling moment when ElBaradei was getting into vehicle, tightly surrounded by bodyguards, and a middle aged man pushed toward him, shouting hysterically, "You'll wreck Egypt, you'll wreck Egypt" before guards pulled him aside.

And some in the Islamist camp are worried violence could disrupt their goal of installing an Islamic state in Egypt. Some of the hardest-line Islamist groups postponed pro-Morsi rallies planned for last Friday at the presidential palace, fearing collisions with opposition protesters.

"We are practicing extreme self-restraint," Mohammed al-Zawahri, who is the brother of al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahri and is himself a prominent jihadi figure in Egypt, said in an earlier interview with The Associated Press.

Morsi's office, his prime minister and the Muslim Brotherhood ? which forms the foundation of Morsi's rule ? all condemned the edicts, or fatwas, calling for the killing of opposition figures. In one fatwa, an ultraconservative cleric, Mahmoud Shaaban, accused the Salvation Front's leaders of "setting Egypt on fire to gain power" and said the "verdict against them under God's law is death."

Some in the opposition, however, say the rhetoric of the Brotherhood and of Morsi's office fuels such threats by depicting opposition protesters as thugs and vandals and accusing the opposition's political leadership of using street violence to topple Morsi. The president has denounced opponents as "weevils eating away at the nation" and claimed to have recordings of the opposition plotting against his rule.

In December, senior Brotherhood member Mohammed Yacout told an independent TV station that the Brotherhood has information that the Front planned to kidnap Morsi to take power.

Salvation Front spokesman Khaled Dawoud said such talk is "dangerous because it is definitely preparing the general atmosphere for attacks against opposition leaders."

"You demonize me, you accuse me of being an agent who receives money from abroad though I can't pay installments for my car," he said. "They don't use the word death, but certainly it could incite young men to take action by their own hands."

Dawoud said he and leading members of the Front receive death threats by phone and text message.

"I used to take these threats lightly," he said. "But after what is happening now, when I go down the street, I look left and right because I am afraid a man with a knife is standing at a corner waiting to stab me."

There have been plenty of deaths already in Egypt's recent tensions. Around 70 people, mostly anti-Morsi protesters, were killed in protests that erupted in late January across much of the nation and continue to simmer. Around a dozen people were killed in November and December. Most of the deaths have come in clashes as security forces clamp down on stone-throwing protesters.

But an outright assassination would be a dangerous new turn in Egypt's turbulent transition since the toppling of autocrat Hosni Mubarak nearly two years ago.

There are certainly precedents.

The Muslim Brotherhood, which was banned until Mubarak's fall, renounced violence in the 1970, but it killed a string of top politicians in the 1940s and 1950s and was accused of trying to assassinate former leader Gamal Abdel-Nasser.

In 1981, then-President Anwar Sadat was gunned down by Islamic extremists on live TV. The Islamic militant insurgency against Mubarak in the 1990s saw a number of assassinations. One radical tried to stab Nobel Laureate novelist Naguib Mahfouz, but he narrowly survived. Writer Farag Fouda, who was a scathing critic of Islamists, was gunned down as he left his office, days after a fatwa called for his death as an apostate.

Fouda's daughter, Samar, warned ElBaradei this week about the new fatwas.

"They killed my father after a fatwa permitting the shedding of his blood. Don't take lightly what might happen and what they say. They are sick," she wrote on her Twitter account.

Some activists worry that there is already a pattern of their members being targeted ? whether for intimidation or worse.

Hamdi el-Fakharani, a lawyer with the Salvation Front, says he has been beaten up several times by suspected Brotherhood members in his hometown, the industrial city of Mahallah el-Kubra in the Nile Delta. Brotherhood members have raised lawsuits against him, accusing him of inciting riots against Morsi in the city the past two weeks.

"It is very possible that one day while the Front leaders are meeting all together, a man with machine gun kills us all," said el-Fakharani. "I am really worried about my family and myself. I change cars all the time."

The opposition is also alarmed about the killing of several young activists since November, most of whom worked on anti-Brotherhood pages on Facebook. Three were shot to death amid crowds of protesters during police crackdowns on rallies in which others died as well. Still, their comrades are convinced that they were specifically targeted.

The first was 16-year-old Gaber Salah, known by the nickname Jeka, who died after being hit by a spray of birdshot at his head and chest from close range during a protest near Tahrir Square on Nov. 15. He was a founder of a Facebook page called "Together Against the Muslim Brotherhood."

Others involved in the page have faced troubles. One founder, a Christian, was summoned by the National Security Agency, the main internal security apparatus, and told not to work on the page anymore, said another administrator of the page, who spoke on condition he be identified only by his first name, Ahmed, for fear of reprisals by police. Yet another founder was snatched from his home on the same day that Jeka was shot, Ahmed said.

"What do you think? I believe this is all planned," Ahmed said.

Mohammed Hussein, also known as Kristi, the founder of a Facebook page called "Brotherhood Liars," was shot to death outside the palace on Feb. 1.

Another prominent activist, Mohammed el-Gindi, disappeared from a Jan. 25 protest in Tahrir, was later brought to a hospital in a coma and died last week. Medical reports say he had burns from electrical shocks on his tongue, wire marks around his neck, smashed ribs and a broken skull. The Interior Ministry denied he was ever held by police.

Justice Minister Ahmed Mekki told the state-run Al-Ahram newspaper Saturday that the coroner concluded el-Gindi died in a car accident.

Omar Morsi, founder of an anti-Brotherhood page called MolotovCola, disappeared from a Jan. 27 protest and his whereabouts was not known for days. He is now comatose in a Cairo hospital with a shotgun pellet in his head.

His father, Ahmed Morsi ? who said he voted for the president in last year's election ? accused the security forces.

"If you keep unleashing the dogs of the Interior Ministry to kill our sons, you will not stay in your seat for long," said the father, addressing Morsi.

Not trying to conceive? Don't forget about birth control!

Sure, this is a blog about trying to conceive. If you are, however, not trying to conceive, you will want to make sure that you do not experience an unintended pregnancy. How?

Thanks to OpenCage/Flickr Creative Commons.

Avoiding unplanned pregnancy

Are you sexually active, of childbearing age, and do not want to get pregnant? Clearly, you need some form of birth control. That?s obvious, isn?t it? Maybe not as obvious as you think, since 50 percent of all pregnancies in the United States are still unplanned. Similar figures apply to most other developed countries. Out of those women who experienced an unintended pregnancy, 11 percent reported not using any contraception at all. The remaining women either used contraception?inconsistently, or got pregnant despite using birth control correctly.

Those women who want to avoid joining the ranks of people who got pregnant without planning to should take a careful look at their contraceptive method. If you are not using contraception at all, it?s time to start. If you are using your contraceptive method inconsistently or are using a method with a high failure rate, you may like to look at other options that will work better for you.

Where do you begin choosing? We?ve got some tips in the second second, covering all the different factors you will want to keep in mind when deciding. ?Believe it or not, female sterilization (tubal ligation) and male vasectomy are the most frequently used contraceptives! These methods are wonderful for couples who know for sure that they never want another child, but do you feel comfortable making that decision? Though we?re not currently planning to have any more children, I would never want to take permanent action to prevent pregnancy.

Intrauterine devices ? the coil ? is the second most common contraceptive worldwide, followed by the pill. Perhaps you will choose from one of these methods, or maybe you will end up with one of the many other methods out there. They include depo provera, nexplanon, condoms, natural family planning and barrier methods. Whether you want to protect yourself from pregnancy during only one act of intercourse, or are looking for a long-term or permanent method, there is something out there that will meet your needs.

Contraceptive decision making

A 2006 survey from the United States showed that over a quarter of women using some type of contraceptive method to prevent pregnancy were unhappy with their chosen method. Sticking to your contraceptive method is easier if you are happy with your method, and it pays off to investigate the different options you have. In today?s world, there are many! What should you consider during the decision making process?

Side effects

First, it is a good idea to consider possible side effects of the contraceptive methods you are looking into. Generally speaking, the contraceptive methods that are currently on the market are very safe. But that does not make them safe for every user. Your doctor is your most valuable partner in deciding which birth control method will work best for you. Women suffering from certain medical conditions may be better off using non-hormonal methods, for instance. Remember that there is no need to have your choice all figured out when you make your appointment ? you can go to your doctor, tell her that you would like contraception, and ask for suggestions.

How effective is your method?

How effective will the birth control method you end up choosing eventually be? Most methods can be rather effective, but that depends completely on how they are used. Ask your doctor about failure rates with typical use compared to perfect use. A woman who consistently uses condoms is less likely to get pregnant than one who is on the pill, but forgets it sometimes, to name an example. Women who have dynamic lives in which they are likely to not use their contraceptive method perfectly may benefit from using methods like depo provera or the mirena coil ? which they don?t need to remember every day.

Protection from STDs

It is clear than only condoms protect from sexually transmitted diseases. If this is an issue for you, then condoms are the obvious choice. Male condoms are much more widely available, and have a lower failure rate, compared to female condoms.

Personal preferences

The same survey I mentioned earlier shows that women who use the vaginal ring (see: What is a NuvaRing?)have the highest satisfaction rates. You may be one of them. Before you choose a method, you will have to look into which methods most appeal to you personally. Some things to consider include how effective the method is, for how long it works, and how easily you can come off the method if you decide to try to conceive. Then, you can look at ease of use.

Reggie Darling: Antiques Week 2013 At Last, Part V

The Winter Antiques Show, cont'd.
Today's post is a continuation of my most recent one about attending the gala opening of the Winter Antiques Show. ?But before I get into the subject matter at hand, Dear Reader, Reggie must acknowledge?that he's rather behind in his reportage on this and other shows of the New York Antiques Week that was.? What with?a demanding day job that requires frequent out-of-town travel (he's writing this from the Admiral's Club lounge at JFK), an over-scheduled social life, and the?need to get in?a full night's sleep (how do some people get by with just a few hours of shut-eye at night, he wonders), Reggie hasn't had much free time to sit down and do what he really wants to do, which is to blog away?to his heart's content, reporting on this and that,?discussing the finer points of ceramics, and?sharing what some might consider to be his persnickety?rules for what he deems to be civilized living in a world of wretchedly disintegrating standards.

"Yes, I will have another cocktail, please . . . and this time, don't bother
with any tonic?just make it gin on the rocks, thanks!"

In any event, and back to the subject at hand, one of the more pleasant aspects of attending a party such as the Winter Antiques Show gala opening is the access one has at such an event to quality alcoholic beverages of one's choice and delicious finger food, seemingly at every turn. ?Not only that, but one is not discouraged from walking around with said liquour-filled glass in one's hand and drinking from it while visiting with one's friends or touring the dealers' booths. ?Just don't put your glass down on that very fine and very rare early eighteenth-century lacquered table, please!

While pausing for a much-needed refreshment to one's cocktail, we chanced upon and spoke with Mr. Ron Bourgeault, the owner of Northeast Auctions and a regular on Antiques Roadshow. ?We met Mr. Bourgeault many years ago while attending a?Williamsburg Antiques Forum?and liked him immensely. ?He is a very pleasant and affable fellow, and it was nice to see him again at the Winter Show.

A view of the Barbara Israel booth

One of the booths that I enjoy seeing at every Winter Show is that of Barbara Israel Garden Antiques, which specializes in truly magnificent garden statuary. ?I especially admired the monumental footed urn shown in the preceding photograph. My next stop at the show was the booth of Hostler Burrows, who deal in twentieth-century furniture and decorative arts. ?I thought their display of art pottery as seen in the following photograph was very handsome, indeed, and I loved the way it was massed on the table.

A grouping of art pottery on display at the Hostler Burrows booth

While on the theme of modern, naturalist objects, Dear Reader, I also very much enjoyed a series of metal sculptures made in the early 1970s by Harry Bertoia, in the booth of Jonathan Boos, of what appear to be small shrubs.

I was quite taken with these Bertoia sculptures

in the?Jonathan Boos booth

Not far from that I was further taken with an early twentieth-century painting in the booth of Thomas Colville Fine Art. ?I think the painting, titled Vertical Construction?and painted by the American artist Werner Drewes in 1938, would look marvelous in our city apartment, which we have decorated with furniture and art from the 1930s through the 1960s.? However, our walls there are already covered with paintings and?besides?I wasn't in a buying mood, at least not at those sticker prices.

I would be very happy to live with this painting
. . . under such circumstances as would allow it . . .

At Darlington House, on the other hand,?our collecting is firmly rooted in the early decades of the nineteenth century. ?To that end, I thought the large landscape shown in the following photograph would be right at home there, hanging on our walls. ?And, Dear Reader, it is being shown by the same dealer, Thomas Colville, as the preceding modern abstract that Reggie so admired! ?No wonder I coveted it . . .

. . . and this one as well!

But one doesn't attend the Winter Show merely to gaze upon the gorgeous and precious objects offered there, Dear Reader, but also to enjoy the beauty of the design of the show and the creativity with which the offerings are artfully arranged and displayed in the booths.

"Mirror, mirror, on the wall . . . "

I thought the placement of the mid-nineteenth-century American sculpture?in?Gerald Peters Gallery's booth?of a young lady staring into a mirror, as seen in the preceding photograph, was teddibly clever.
One booth that I am sure to linger in at the Winter Show?is that of the London-based dealers Cohen & Cohen, who specialize in magnificent Chinese export porcelain made for the European markets. ?This year their booth was dramatically done up to resemble a porcelain display "cabinet" room in a princely palace, with suitably princely offerings.? One of the highlights of the Cohen & Cohen booth (if not of the entire show), in Reggie's view, ?was an enormous punch bowl (it is large enough for a baby's bath) commissioned in the first years of the 1800s by States Morris Dyckman?(1755-1806), an immensely rich (well, for a time at least) American living in London.??Mr. Dyckman was the builder of Boscobel, one of the finest Federal houses in this country, and he spent a fortune in England outfitting it with the best goods and decorations that money could buy. ?Acording to the dealer Michael Cohen, shown lifting the bowl in the preceding photograph, the bowl is thought never to have actually found its way to Boscobel, for Mr. Dyckman apparently died before the bowl was completed in China and sent to the agent in England who had brokered its commission for (the now deceased) Mr. Dyckman. ?I hope that Boscobel House and Gardens, which owns and manages the house today, was able to buy the punch bowl?for it is at Boscobel that the bowl truly belongs. One of the most creatively decorated booths at the Winter Show every year is that of Ms. Elle Shushan, this country's leading dealer in fine portrait miniatures. ?Every year she?and her dear friend, Mr. Ralph Harvard, the noted classical designer and architect, create an enchanting and whimsical booth in which to display her offerings. ?This year Mr. Harvard created a fantasy of the New Orleans studio of artist?John Wesley Jarvis (1780-1840), who apparently shared a studio in the Crescent City for a time with John James Audubon (1785-1851). ?The booth was a tour de force!
We had a jolly time in Ms. Shushan's booth, speaking with her and her charming friends, and taking it all in. ?While we were there we enjoyed meeting Ms. Susan Stein, the Richard Gilder Senior Curator and Vice President of Museum Programs at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, and sharing with her that we were the proud owners of a geranium that purportedly came from a cutting of one at Mr. Jefferson's house, given to him by Rubens Peale of the illustrious Peale family of Baltimore. ?She knew exactly what we were talking about, and good-naturedly humoured us.

Hyde Park's booth of superb English furniture and decorations

By this point we were beginning to wonder about the whereabouts of the friends we were to meet for dinner that evening. ?We thought that one of them, Ms. Emily Evans Eerdmans, might be at the Hyde Park Antiques, Ltd., booth, so we checked there. ?No luck, so on we scurried . . .

A delightful painting of a naughty kitty?

I paused at the booth of David A. Schorsch & Eileen Smiles American Antiques to admire a nineteenth-century American painting of an adorable, mischievous cat wreaking havoc upon a lady's sewing box, shown in the preceding photograph. ?Isn't it charming? ?Hello kitty!
After fortifying ourselves with another round of cocktails at the commodious bar at the rear of the Armory, I stopped (in my tracks, actually) to admire the very well-formed posterior of this classical statue?in the booth of?Safani Gallery,?as seen in the preceding image. ?And believe me, Dear Reader, I wasn't the only one doing so!??I could barely get close enough to get a good photograph for you, given the mob scene of ogglers surrounding it, oohing and aahing while gulping down their drinks and mopping their brows with excitement. My next stop, directly across the aisle from said saucy statue, was the booth of San Francisco-based?Peter Pap Oriental Rugs. ?Mr. Pap can be seen standing inside the booth, to the right, in the preceding photograph. ?I stopped to say hello to him, as we share a dear friend in common, the noted California decorator Guy "Pickles" Gurquin. ?Not only that, but Mr. Pap and I have another connection, as our mothers were dear friends many years ago. With reservations beckoning and stomachs growling, Boy and I resumed our search for our dinner partners. ?Where could they be? ?Not in the Adelson Galleries booth, staring longingly, as we did, at the George Bellows painting on view. Nor were our friends in the Macklowe Gallery booth, admiring the Tiffany lamps on display. "Excuse me, have you seen either Ms. Maureen Footer or Ms. Emily Evans Eerdmans?"? I asked at the Keshishian booth, where this lovely carpet and tapestry were on view. ?Unfortunately, to no avail. Perhaps they were in the Peter Fetterman Gallery booth, admiring its arrangement of the masters of modern photography? ?Nope. Nor were they at the Philip Colleck, Ltd., booth, admiring this wonderful painting, as I did. ?Don't you love the juxtoposition of the vibrant twentieth-century painting with the buttoned-up Regency commode? I briefly interrupted my search for our pals and introduced myself to man-about-town Mr.?Michael Henry Adams, whom I recognized from Facebook, where we are "friends." ?The charming Mr. Adams proceeded to tell me a most amusing story about dancing with Pat Buckley at a birthday party given for Bobby Short at Mortimer's years ago. ?Hilarious! Just paces away I noticed the booth of Taylor B. Williams Antiques?and the display cases within, packed with ceramics and snuffboxes. ?Hmmmm, I thought?better check this out, Reggie! And it was there, Dear Reader, that my resolve to keep my wallet firmly closed and in my coat pocket finally evaporated.??For I found a superb example of an early nineteenth-century English pearlware figure of the type we collect at Darlington House and which I have written about previously.? When confronted by the pristene condition figure of this hunter, circa 1790, shown in the following photograph, I was helpless.? I had to have it!

It is fortunate, Dear Reader, that I was able to acquire the figure of the little hunter at a most reasonable price, at least as these things go once they've swum upstream to places such as the Winter Antiques Show.??I am thrilled to have it and most grateful that Mr. Williams was willing to accommodate me in acquiring it.

And who should I then be so fortunate to find immediately upon exiting said booth, but our dinner companions, Ms. Footer and Ms. Eerdmans, having a cozy chat with that amusing bon vivant, Mr. Mario Buatta!

Before leaving the Armory with the ladies I insisted that the supremely elegant Ms. Footer allow me to photograph her posing in front of the Boldini portrait of Mrs. Elizabeth Drexel Lehr exhibited in the Newport pavilion. ?Doesn't Ms. Footer look ravishing?? Would that Mr. Boldini were alive today, I am sure he would clamour to have Ms. Footer allow him to paint her portrait, don't you?

The four of us, along with the noted artist John Kelley, then repaired to the nearby Sel et Poivre restaurant for a tasty, conversation-packed dinner. ?"S&P," as Boy and I call it, is a favorite destination of ours for?neighborhood bistro fare, and it is always jam-packed with happy diners tucking in after the big shows at the Armory?as it was the night we dined there, too.

And so you have it, Dear Reader: Reggie's big night out at the enchanting opening party for the Winter Antiques Show.

Won't you please join me there next year?

Distro Issue 77 hits the road with the Tesla Model S

In April of 2011, we spent some time in the driver's seat of the Tesla Roadster 2.5 Sport. Its throttle response and dashing good looks earned high marks, but the range anxiety left a bit to be desired. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats in the House of Representatives will unveil a proposal on Thursday to combat gun violence, including a bid to ban assault weapons, party sources said.

In addition to outlawing semi-automatic assault weapons and imposing limits on high-capacity ammunition clips, the House Democrat package, like one advanced by Democratic President Barack Obama, would require that all gun buyers be subject to background checks and provide for improvements in mental health services.

All these proposals - except for those concerning mental health - will face obstacles in the Republican-led House.

House Democratic leaders, joined by members of the chamber's gun violence task force, are planning to announce the package after a visit to their three-day retreat in Virginia by Obama, who has made gun control a top priority in his second term.

The debate over gun violence gained urgency after a gunman killed 20 first-graders and six adults on December 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. The killer, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, used a Bushmaster AR-15 type assault rifle to shoot his victims before killing himself.

Vice President Joe Biden, who led the effort to craft the White House proposals, told House Democrats on Wednesday that they have an obligation to step up and take action.

"I don't want to hear about 'well we can't take it on because it's too politically dangerous,'" Biden said. "There's an overwhelming consensus about the need to act."

Biden acknowledged that members of Congress who backed a 1994 ban on assault weapons - which expired in 2004 - faced a voter backlash that may have cost many of them their jobs.

"I'm here to tell you the world has changed since 1994," Biden said.

A bipartisan group of senators on Thursday offered legislation expanding access to mental health professionals and improving the quality of mental health care in the United States.

The group, led by Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan and Republican Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri, noted that people experiencing severe but undiagnosed psychological disorders are at risk of committing violent acts at a rate 15 times higher than those receiving treatment.

The powerful National Rifle Association has led the charge against stricter gun laws, but has agreed with those who have called for improvements in mental health treatment.

At this point the only gun-related proposal with much bipartisan support is the one requiring background checks for all gun buyers.

Car bombs in Shi'ite areas of Iraq kill 34

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Five car bombs killed at least 34 people in Shi'ite areas of Iraq on Friday, police and medics said, as sectarian and ethnic tensions intensify ahead of provincial elections in April.

Two car bombs were detonated simultaneously at a bus stop near a Friday street market selling birds and other pets in the Shi'ite district of Kadhimiya in Baghdad, killing at least 16 people and wounding another 44, police and hospital sources said.

Footage of the scene showed dozens of buses and taxis destroyed by the explosion and blood on the ground.

Ongoing violence following the withdrawal of U.S. troops in late 2011 is stoking fears of a return to the sectarian strife that killed tens of thousands of Iraqis in 2006 and 2007.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a Shi'ite, is facing mass protests by disenchanted Sunni Muslims and is at loggerheads with ethnic Kurds who run their northern region autonomously from Baghdad.

The prospect of the election is hardening the divisions as political leaders appeal to their constituencies with often hostile rhetoric that rejects compromise.

In the Shi'ite city of Hilla, 100 km (60 miles) south of Baghdad, 15 people were killed in two car bomb explosions at a vegetable market.

"I was shopping when I heard the first explosion. I was scared and tried to reach my car to run away but before I got in the second explosion went off," said Habib al-Murshidi who was at the scene.

"I saw many people, women and old men lying on the ground which was covered with blood and scattered fruit and vegetables".

Another three people were killed by a parked car bomb in Kerbala, 80 km (50 miles) southwest of Baghdad, police said.

Thousands of Sunni Muslims have taken to the streets since late December in protest at what they see as the marginalization of their sect since the fall of Saddam Hussein and the empowerment of Iraq's Shi'ite majority through the ballot box.

The demonstrations in the Sunni heartland of Anbar are also compounding fears that war in neighboring Syria, where Sunni rebels are fighting to topple a leader backed by Shi'ite Iran, could further upset Iraq's own delicate sectarian and ethnic balance.

No group claimed responsibility for the attacks on Friday.

Iraq is home to several Sunni insurgent groups that have carried out at least one high-casualty attack a month since the U.S. withdrawal. They include a local branch of al Qaeda, the Islamic State of Iraq, which often targets Shi'ites, seeking to reignite sectarian strife.

On Monday, a suicide bomber attacked a government-backed militia in Taji, killing at least 22 people -- the seventh of eight suicide bombings in Iraq over the past month alone.

McClatchy posts 4Q loss on debt refinancing charge

(AP) ? The McClatchy Co., publisher of 30 daily newspapers including The Sacramento Bee and The Miami Herald, said Thursday that it posted a loss in the fourth quarter after booking a one-time charge for refinancing debt.

The loss in the three months through Dec. 30 came to $30 million, or 35 cents per share. A year ago, the company posted a quarterly profit of $42 million, or 49 cents per share.

The debt refinancing caused a $60 million after-tax charge, or roughly 70 cents per share.

Revenue rose 1 percent to $355.7 million, but the gain was primarily due to an extra week that the previous year's quarter didn't have. On a comparable 13-week basis, revenue fell 5 percent to $333 million from $351.4 million.

Still, the company said its effort to increase digital advertising revenue is paying off. For the comparable 13 weeks, total digital ad revenue was up 3.5 percent to $51.3 million compared with the same period a year earlier. Revenue from digital advertising made up 20 percent of the company's total ad revenue, compared to 18.5 percent a year ago.

"Our unrelenting focus on growing our digital business continues to be rewarded," said McClatchy CEO Pat Talamantes.

Circulation revenue was down 2 percent to $65.7 million over 13 weeks.

Like other newspaper publishers, McClatchy began charging readers to access online stories of most of its newspapers during the quarter. Under the system, customers must pay for content after viewing a certain number of free articles each month. The company said its "Plus Program" generated $1.2 million in circulation revenue in 2012, and is expected to generate $20 million by the end of 2013.

The company issued $910 million in bonds due in 2022 at a 9 percent annual rate to refinance $846 million in bonds due in 2017 at 11.5 percent.

McClatchy's chief financial officer, Elaine Lintecum, said the refinancing should reduce the company's interest payments by $15 million in 2013. The company had debt of $1.63 billion as of Jan. 17, down slightly from $1.64 billion at the end of 2011.

Next-gen e-readers: Improved 'peacock' technology could lock in color for high-res displays

Feb. 5, 2013 ? Iridescence, or sheen that shifts color depending on your viewing angle, is pretty in peacock feathers. But it's been a nuisance for engineers trying to mimic the birds' unique color mechanism to make high-resolution, reflective, color display screens.

Now, researchers at the University of Michigan have found a way to lock in so-called structural color, which is made with texture rather than chemicals. A paper on the work is published online in the current edition of the Nature journal Scientific Reports.

In a peacock's mother-of-pearl tail, precisely arranged hairline grooves reflect light of certain wavelengths. That's why the resulting colors appear different depending on the movement of the animal or the observer. Imitating this system?minus the rainbow effect?has been a leading approach to developing next-generation reflective displays.

The new U-M research could lead to advanced color e-books and electronic paper, as well as other color reflective screens that don't need their own light to be readable. Reflective displays consume much less power than their backlit cousins in laptops, tablet computers, smartphones and TVs. The technology could also enable leaps in data storage and cryptography. Documents could be marked invisibly to prevent counterfeiting.

Led by Jay Guo, professor of electrical engineering and computer science, the researchers harnessed the ability of light to funnel into nanoscale metallic grooves and get trapped inside. With this approach, they found the reflected hues stay true regardless of the viewer's angle.

"That's the magic part of the work," Guo said. "Light is funneled into the nanocavity, whose width is much, much smaller than the wavelength of the light. And that's how we can achieve color with resolution beyond the diffraction limit. Also counterintuitive is that longer wavelength light gets trapped in narrower grooves."

The diffraction limit was long thought to be the smallest point you could focus a beam of light to. Others have broken the limit as well, but the U-M team did so with a simpler technique that also produces stable and relatively easy-to-make color, Guo said.

"Each individual groove?much smaller than the light wavelength?is sufficient to do this function. In a sense, only the green light can fit into the nanogroove of a certain size," Guo said.

The U-M team determined what size slit would catch what color light. Within the framework of the print industry standard cyan, magenta and yellow color model, the team found that at groove depths of 170 nanometers and spacing of 180 nanometers, a slit 40 nanometers wide can trap red light and reflect a cyan color. A slit 60 nanometers wide can trap green and make magenta. And one 90 nanometers wide traps blue and produces yellow. The visible spectrum spans from about 400 nanometers for violet to 700 nanometers for red.

"With this reflective color, you could view the display in sunlight. It's very similar to color print," Guo said.

To make color on white paper, (which is also a reflective surface), printers arrange pixels of cyan, magenta and yellow in such a way that they appear to our eyes as the colors of the spectrum. A display that utilized Guo's approach would work in a similar way.

To demonstrate their device, the researchers etched nanoscale grooves in a plate of glass with the technique commonly used to make integrated circuits, or computer chips. Then they coated the grooved glass plate with a thin layer of silver. When light?which is a combination of electric and magnetic field components?hits the grooved surface, its electric component creates what's called a polarization charge at the metal slit surface, boosting the local electric field near the slit. That electric field pulls a particular wavelength of light in.

Right now, the new device can make static pictures, and the researchers hope to develop a moving picture version in the near future.

The research is funded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the National Science Foundation. The paper is titled "Angle-Insensitive Structural Colours based on Metallic Nanocavities and Coloured Pixels beyond the Diffraction Limit."

Former Southfield resident Terry Grantling, who with her family has been homeless since last year, was pleased to receive a check from a Bloomfield Hills couple after a story about her plight ran in The Oakland Press. Tuesday, February 5, 2013. The Oakland Press/TIM THOMPSON

A generous gift sent to The Oakland Press came as a surprise to a former Southfield resident, homeless for nearly a year.

??Wow,? said Terry Grantling, now living with her husband and three children in Detroit, as she opened a letter from a Bloomfield Hills couple. Inside was a note and a check for $100.

?That was so nice, that is a blessing, wow,? said Grantling, 35, who works teaching special education students on Detroit?s East Side.

The Grantling family?s struggle with homelessness was profiled in a Jan. 28 story by Diana Dillaber Murray in The Oakland Press.

?I don?t think we really realized what we?d been through until we did the story,? Grantling said.

Eviction happened last August

Only last May Terry and husband Eddie ? and three children, twins Morgan and Madison, 8, and Eddie III, 9 ? were looking forward to moving from their Southfield apartment to a new home.?

Terry was finishing her degree in education from Eastern Michigan University to become a special education teacher. Eddie was in his 13th year of employment at Detroit Diesel and working on a degree in electrical engineering at Wayne State University.?

Then on May 29, Eddie was laid off. The couple lost their chance to buy the house. Eddie even pawned his wedding ring to generate some money to pay a month?s rent. Continued...

The Grantlings were evicted from their apartment in August, and then got by staying with friends and family. Staff with the Oakland Schools Homeless Student Education Program assisted the family by helping the children stay in school.

In the meantime both Terry and Eddie have gotten work and the family has been able to temporarily stay at a cousin?s Detroit foreclosed home.

The couple is saving money to be able to move into their own home this year.

The note from the donors which accompanied the check said, ?We were very touched by your struggle to keep your family together. Please accept this small gift and our prayers for all of you. We are well aware that most of us are only a couple of paychecks away from being in the same position as you are. In Jesus Christ?s name, we give this to you.?

The couple did not immediately return a call made to them by The Oakland Press.

Grantling had immediate plans for the money.

?My kids are sick with the flu, and it?s $30 per child to go to the doctor so this will go toward that bill,? said Grantling.

?I?ve been trying to do everything on my own to get them well.?

She paused, again looking at the check, ?It?s a blessing!?

(AP) ? Officials say they stormed a bunker in Alabama to rescue a 5-year-old child being held hostage there after his abductor was seen with a gun.

Steve Richardson with the FBI's office in Mobile said at a news conference Monday afternoon that negotiations deteriorated and that 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes had been seen with a gun.

At that, officers believed the child was in imminent danger. Officers entered the bunker just after 3 p.m. CST.

It was not immediately clear how Dykes died.

Exercise Can Be Good For The Heart, And Maybe For Sperm, Too

Human sperm race to fertilize an egg.

David M. Phillips/Science Source

Guys, it may be time to get off the couch and hit the treadmill ? especially if you want to have kids.

Okay, we all know that exercise is good for us. It can reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease, to name a few benefits. Now researchers say physical activity may also help keep sperm healthy and happy.

A study published Monday in the British Journal of Sports Medicine suggests that how physically active a guy is can affect his total sperm count and sperm concentration.

Researchers surveyed 189 young men (ages 18 to 22) on their exercise and TV-watching habits over a three-month period. They also collected and analyzed the participants' semen.

Men who watched 20 or more hours of TV per week had a sperm concentration 44 percent lower than those who watched almost no TV. On the other hand, men who exercised more than 14 hours per week had a sperm concentration 73 percent higher than men who exercised less than five hours per week.

These effects held true even when other factors like body weight, stress and diet were taken into account.

According to lead author Audrey Gaskins, a doctoral student at Harvard School of Public Health, sperm concentration and total sperm count are two of the main factors that clinicians consider in assessing male fertility.

So is being active the key to fertility?

Not so fast. Gaskins cautions that it's not possible to make conclusions about cause and effect in a study like this one. "Ideally, we would have done a randomized control trial where we had men switch from different behaviors and then measured the results," she says.

She also points out that different types of physical activity may have different effects on semen quality. For example, both biking and long-distance running can actually reduce semen quality, according to previous studies.

Nevertheless, this study might be onto something. A year ago, while conducting separate research on how diet affects semen quality, Gaskins and her team noticed that physical activity kept showing up as a significant factor. "It caught our eye," she says. "That's when we decided to look into it further."

It's unclear why physical activity might affect sperm count. Gaskins hypothesizes that it's because exercise protects against oxidative stress, which can damage male germ cells. You lose that protection when you sit around all day in front of the TV.

Sperm production is sensitive to temperature. So being a couch potato may thwart sperm production by increasing scrotal temperature.

Are the ill effects of a sedentary lifestyle on sperm permanent? Gaskins says more research needs to be done to answer that question. However, because it takes about three months to produce new sperm, couch potatoes probably aren't doomed to suboptimal semen. "That's the nice thing about male fertility," she says. "It seems to be more potentially modifiable."
