Professor David Jones of the Peninsula College Music Department is orchestrating the event from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Maier Performance Hall, and seating is first come, first served.
?Everybody's welcome,? Jones said, adding that Matheny ?is a wonderful player.?
A protege of the late jazz master Art Farmer and a Berklee College of Music alumnus, Matheny was headed for gigs in Portland, Ore., and Seattle when he contacted Jones.
His workshop with the Peninsula College jazz players will explore the creation of melody and the development of one's own sound and playing style.
?Your solo is an opportunity to express something entirely new and profoundly personal,? Matheny has said.
?Tell your own story. Sing your own song. This is no time for plugging in recycled, memorized material.?
Matheny's workshop is for the avid jazz performer and listener, Jones said.
?We're very fortunate to have [Matheny] teach a workshop for us.?
