Understand sleep disorders, provide correct diagnosis and treatment

WASHINGTON, DC, April 2, 2013-- The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) is pleased to announce the launch of a comprehensive free online sleep disorders resource for all professionals in primary care. The "Sleep Disorders" guide is the updated web version of Dr. Peter Hauri's book, The Sleep Disorders, first published in 1977.

"We are honored to have worked with Dr. Hauri to extend the important work he began over 35 years ago," said David Cloud, CEO of NSF. The book has long served as a sleep care primer for generations of non-sleep medicine physicians and technologists. "The NSF will maintain and update this book as a free online resource for future generations as a tribute to Dr. Hauri."

Dr. Hauri served as a resource in bringing the book back for this new and permanent application and unfortunately died shortly before its completion. He was a psychologist and pioneer in researching the mechanics of a good night's sleep offering guidelines to combat insomnia. He retired as the director of the Mayo Sleep Disorders Center.

"Finding sufficient time for sleep care education within formal medical school and other health care training programs has remained an elusive goal for decades," explains Cloud. "To address this challenge, the National Sleep Foundation is proud to make this "Sleep Disorders" resource accessible through a free and easy to navigate web resource. We developed this resource specifically for the non-specialist who needed a free, fast and convenient tool."

This online resources serves as a practical introduction to sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy, circadian rhythm disruption, parasomnia, sleep-related movement disorders, and more. Easily accessible on portable devices such as iPad, ebook readers, this tool can be instantly pulled up in a physician's office.

Visit http://www.sleepdisorders.sleepfoundation.org for free answers about sleep disorders available online 24/7. While designed for primary care physicians and professionals, the general public is welcomed to access the content. It will soon be available in print.

Recari shows strength in battling eating disorder - Golf Channel

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. ? Beatriz Recari never participated in the running of the bulls while growing up in Pamplona, Spain.

She knows what it?s like, though, to fear a dangerous threat bearing down on her.

She escaped the potential ravaging effects of an eating disorder that briefly threatened her promising golf career.

When Recari won the Kia Classic last weekend, her triumph resonated beyond her inner circle. It was another triumph of hope for the new cause she?s representing. Her victory is an inspiration for young girls who struggle with anorexia, bulimia or binge-eating disorders.

Just a little more than a week before winning her second LPGA title, Recari, 25, was introduced as an ambassador for The Alliance of Eating Disorders Awareness. Recari heads into the Kraft Nabisco Championship this week with momentum and a larger purpose.

?If I can help just one person, it will be huge,? Recari said. ?I think the importance of my experience is that I?m healthy now, everything is fine, I have a good mindset, I?ve learned a lot, and I just really want to give back and share what I?ve learned.?

At the 2007 Finnair Masters on the Ladies European Tour, Recari?s health failed. She got caught up in something larger than herself. She became so weak going without eating that she struggled to walk the golf course. She was down to 100 pounds and losing her hair.

?I physically could not finish 18 holes,? Recari said. ?I called my dad, and I said, `I need help, I can?t do this. I have such high goals for myself as a golfer, and I?m going against them. I need help.? So my dad and a friend of his who is a doctor came to that tournament.?

Recari, her LET privileges secure for the following year, left the tour to address her issues and recover.

?You are in denial,? Recari said. ?It?s your goal to stay on that path and keep getting thinner and thinner ... Part of this is depending on people telling you that you look great. It?s all about being skinny and being beautiful. You have to quit depending on what other people say.?

Recari?s recent victory elevates her profile and her platform. She heads to Kraft Nabisco looking to make some history in trying to become the first Spaniard to win a women?s major championship. She?s becoming an outstanding driver of the ball, a skill she believes suits her game for Mission Hills? Dinah Shore Course.

Recari tied for 26th at last year?s Kraft Nabisco, which equals her best finish in the 12 major championships she has played.

?I was pretty happy with my performance in the majors last year,? Recari said. ?I was leading after the first round of the LPGA Championship; I was bogey free in the first round of the U.S. Women?s Open and was just a shot or two off the lead.

?Last week?s win was definitely a confidence booster. I?m looking forward to Kraft because I think it fits my game with it being really important there to drive the ball straight.?

As she makes her way on tour, Recari is beginning to hear from women who face the health issues she once faced. She first went public with her struggles when she designated The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness as her charity recipient for winnings at the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup two years ago.

?For us, at the Alliance, it means so very much to have a pro athlete come out and be willing to use her experience to help others,? said Johanna Kandel, founder and executive director of the Alliance. ?So often, when it comes to eating disorders, there is still a lot of shame surrounding it. So, although many athletes have struggled, they are very hesitant to share. By her not only sharing her experience, but telling people it?s OK to talk about it and that there is help and there is hope and people do recover, it?s so significant, coming from her.?

According to the Alliance, eating disorders affect 25 million Americans alone with women making up 75 percent.

?There is tremendous courage?in Beatriz stepping forward, sharing her story and supporting our cause.? Kandel said. ?Eating disorders have the highest lethality rate of all psychological disorders. By coming forward, she is already getting feedback from people who are struggling, who have reached out to her.?

Kandel is a former professional dancer who founded The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness after recovering from a 10-year battle with anorexia, bulimia and binge-eating disorder. She has been recovered for 13 years.

?The biggest impact Beatriz will have is giving people hope and spreading the message that there is help and people do recover,? Kandel said.

Fire at Islamic school kills 13 children in Yangon

YANGON (Reuters) - An electrical fire at an Islamic school in Myanmar's biggest city killed 13 children early on Tuesday, authorities said.

The children, all boys, died of suffocation in the fire at a dormitory of a school next to a mosque in Yangon at about 2:40 a.m., neighbors and officials said.

"A total of 13 boys were killed in the fire caused by overheating of a transformer. They died of suffocation after inhaling too much smoke," a Central Fire Service duty officer said.

The fire could raise tensions following Buddhist-led mob violence against Muslims elsewhere in the country, including firebombings of mosques and Muslim homes. Since 43 people were killed in violence that erupted in Meikhtila town on March 20, unrest has spread to at least 15 other towns and villages.

Neighbors and witnesses said it appeared the crowded Yangon dormitory locked its doors due to heightened security concerns.

"It seemed the boys didn't get a chance to get away because the doors were locked because of the unstable situation," a resident said.

According to official records, electrical faults and overheating are major causes of fires in Yangon.

Careers: What Does It Take to Become a Real Estate Agent? Part 6 ...

What is it really like to be a real estate agent, and what does it take to become one? We interviewed six Redfin Agents to find out why they chose real estate as a career and how they came to work at Redfin. Yesterday we profiled Chad Pluid, who managed a restaurant and worked in banking before joining Redfin. Today you?ll hear from?Bree Al-Rashid, a Redfin listing agent who worked as horse trainer, financial planner, and a real estate agent at another brokerage before joining the company.

If you?re looking for more agent info, be sure to check our entire series of real estate agent profiles and don?t hesitate to investigate open real estate jobs at Redfin.

bree-alrashid-270x360Bree Al-Rashid ? Listing Agent

Before joining Redfin, Bree worked as horse trainer, financial planner, and a real estate agent at another brokerage.

What did you do before you joined Redfin?

In college I ran a riding school and summer camp for kids to help pay for my tuition. One of my riding students ended up being a high level VP of a financial planning firm. She tried to hook me up with her son, but when that didn?t work out she said I should work for her firm. I did that for about two years, and stayed in the financial planning industry for six years.

What made you want to pursue your real estate license, and what was the process like?

I was tired of being stuck inside an office. My husband worked in real estate and was looking for help, so I decided to become licensed. We built a business together at Keller Williams, and then worked at RE/MAX for awhile.

Coming from an industry where there was a lot of licensing that you had to obtain, getting my license was pretty easy. You have to plan it out and do the classes, but if you?re a good test taker it?s fine. For most people who are interested in the industry, it?s totally feasible. You don?t have to have achieved high levels of math or analysis to be a licensed real estate professional.

How did you hear about Redfin, and why did you decide to apply?

A colleague at RE/MAX became a Redfin partner agent, and he introduced me to it. I was a partner agent for awhile, but when I decided I needed more balance in my life, I applied to Redfin. I started as a listing specialist, which provides the opportunity to keep regular hours. It has afforded a much more balanced life, especially with vacation time.

Do you worry about the market going up and down?

It hasn?t been a problem. I was always very lucky; I had as much or more business than I wanted.

What?s the best part of your job?

Redfin has a team of people that you can count on for support, so you can create balance in your life. Working on your own as an agent is a challenge; it?s hard to be a graphic designer, HR manager and bookkeeper all in one day and be successful. Now my day is spent marketing houses, negotiating contracts, and solving real estate-related problems. Redfin offers a chance to get your life back.

I love Redfin?s feel, the corporate culture. I love its weirdness ? how we?re thinking out of the box ? it?s super progressive, not stale and stodgy. I?m sick of it sounding like real estate is only for people who are over sixty. Redfin is really fresh. There?s also a lot of room for growth. If you want to work in other parts of the company, there are options. You?re not stuck being an agent for the rest of your life.

What skills do you think are important to be successful as a real estate agent?

People who come from a liberal arts background are often successful in real estate. 90% of what we do is good communications, reading into subtext, connecting the dots for human beings. People who are overly analytical struggle in this industry because they lose sight of the human component. There?s so much that can?t be measured in real estate; you can?t measure human emotions or the layout of a house.? It takes people skills and good communicators to be successful. Organization, problem solving, and the ability to be calm during stressful situations are also important.

What would you tell people who are thinking about becoming an agent?

If you?re getting into real estate as an independent broker and you have no background in the industry or a natural market to find business, it?s a tough business to get into. I came from financial planning, which has a similar struggle. It?s very difficult to find clients right off the bat. That?s what is unique about Redfin; if you have interest in the agency and you?re 22 years old, you can get into it right away. Or if you?re 50 and coming back for a second or third career, you can do the same thing. There are so many great built-in systems, and there?s an opportunity for mentorships. We don?t let people fail at Redfin.

At Redfin our motto is ?keep it weird.? What?s something ?weird? about you?

My pig won ?Grand Champion Market Hog? at the 1994 Oakhurst Fair. I didn?t get chicken pox until I was 14.? Then I gave them to my mom who was 41.?I can throw a Frisbee with my feet.

FCC seeks public comment in review of TV, radio decency policy

(Reuters) - Regulators on Monday launched a review of policy governing the way it enforces broadcasts of nudity and profanity on radio and television and asked for public comment on whether its current approach should be amended.

The Federal Communications Commission issued a public notice inviting comment on whether it should focus its efforts on pursuing only the "most egregious" cases in which rules are broken, or focus on isolated cases of nudity and expletives uttered on radio and TV shows.

The public notice follows a Supreme Court ruling in June 2012 against a government crackdown some 10 years ago on nudity and profanity.

"We now seek comment on whether the full Commission should make changes to its current (egregious cases) broadcast indecency policies or maintain them as they are," the FCC said on Monday.

It asked for public input over the next 30 days on whether, for example, it should treat cases of nudity in the same way as profanity, and whether "deliberate and repetitive" use of expletives is necessary to prove indecency.

Since the Supreme Court ruling, the FCC said it had focused its enforcement on "egregious cases" and had handled a backlog of more than 1 million complaints since June 2012.

The Supreme Court said that the FCC rules were vague and that it had not given fair notice of a tougher stance that resulted in three-high profile incidents that resulted in complaints and fines against U.S. networks.

These included the broadcast of a glimpse of singer Janet Jackson's breast at a 2004 Super Bowl half time show.

Under a 2001 FCC policy that was amended in 2004, network and local radio and television channels can be fined up to $325,000 for a single fleeting expletive blurted out on a live show or for brief glimpses of nudity. Cable and satellite operators are not subject to such rules.

The FCC said that it would continue to enforce its current polices as usual during the comment period and that Monday's public notice did not alter any of its policies.

The TV industry has argued that policies have been inconsistent over the years, allowing the television broadcast of movie "Schindler's List" that includes nudity, but leading to fines against News Corp's Fox television for expletives uttered by singer Cher and reality TV star Nicole Richie on awards shows in 2002 and 2003.

The most publicized case in recent years was the so-called "wardrobe malfunction" that allowed part of Jackson's breast to be briefly exposed during a half-time show for the 2004 Super Bowl football championship that drew half a million complaints.

CBS was fined $550,000 but the fine was thrown out by the Supreme Court in a separate judgment in late June 2012.

China's official factory PMI at 11-month high in March

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's factory production lines ran at their fastest in 11 months in March, according to a reading of 50.9 on the official manufacturing purchasing managers index (PMI) published on Monday, signaling economic recovery may be accelerating.

The rise missed market expectations of a rise to 52.0, as forecast in a Reuters poll of economists, but was nevertheless a pick-up from February's five-month low of 50.1.

A rise in the output index to a 10-month high of 52.7 from 51.2 in February was highlighted in the data released by the National Bureau of Statistics.

"The improvement in the index, which changes the downward trend of the first two months of the year, indicates that the economic outlook in general is stabilizing," Zhang Liqun, an analyst at the Development Research Center, a state think-tank, said in a statement accompanying the index.

Another PMI survey - sponsored by HSBC and which tracks mainly small and medium-sized firms in the private sector as opposed to the mainly large, state-backed companies in the official survey - is scheduled to be published at 0145 GMT.
