Harassment of gay students at US schools is becoming less frequent, a new study says.
The study, conducted in 2011 and released today by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, found that less than a third of gay students experienced verbal harassment ?frequently or every day?.
The results are down from 40.6 per cent in 2009 and?45 per cent in 2007.
The National School Climate Survey included viewpoints from 8584 US students between 13 and 20 years old.
?The 2011 survey marks a possible turning point in the school experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people in high schools and middle schools,? says research head Joseph Kosciw.
Physical harassment, such as shoving or pushing, was also down three percentage points from 2009.
Despite these positive results, GLBT students? school experiences were far from incident-free.
Just over 80 per cent of?GLBT students said they had been harassed or threatened over the past year due to their sexual orientation.
And 18.3% said they had been physically assaulted.
Having gay-straight alliances at schools were generally found to lead to fewer incidences of bullying.
