JPL employees demand probe of NASA's data security measures

Workers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory are demanding that Congress investigate the agency's actions following the theft of a laptop computer containing personal information for up to 10,000 employees.

The incident is just the latest in a series of NASA disputes involving employee background checks.

The laptop was stolen from an employee's locked vehicle in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 31. Several weeks later, letters were sent to workers notifying them that personal information gathered in NASA background checks, including home addresses and Social Security numbers, was stolen, and that they were now at risk for identity theft.

On Wednesday, Pasadena attorney Dan Stormer said he planned to file a class-action lawsuit on behalf of current and former JPL employees.

"We are outraged," Stormer told reporters at a news conference. "The most sensitive, the most protected information that you can have, was released from our clients' background investigations."

Robert M. Nelson, a former JPL research scientist, said he quit in April because he viewed the government's background checks as excessively intrusive.

Nelson was among a group of employees who sued the federal government unsuccessfully in 2007 over privacy issues.

"It gives me little pleasure to say that we told you so," Nelson said. "But we did. Five years ago we warned of this possibility that if the government had this kind of information at this kind of detail, that it will surely be leaked."

Rep. Adam B. Schiff (D-Burbank), a member of the House Appropriations science subcommittee, called on NASA "to report on and accelerate its efforts to maintain data security."

Rep. Judy Chu (D-Monterey Park) said in a statement she would push the agency to improve data security. "NASA has previously had security breaches of sensitive information," she said. "It has to stop."

The stolen computer, which was password-protected but not encrypted, was never intended to leave NASA's Washington, D.C., building, officials said.

"It was removed from the building against agency policy," said Bob Jacobs, a NASA spokesman.

The employee who removed the laptop will be disciplined, and NASA is now rushing to encrypt all of its computers by Dec. 21, he said.

"Ultimately, NASA regrets the incident and the inconvenience it is causing everyone whose information may be exposed," Jacobs said.

In recent years, NASA has stopped asking questions about workers' sexual history and other sensitive topics, but some workers still view the background checks as invasive.

Josette Bellan, a JPL senior research scientist, said she submitted information for the background investigation in April, but it was initially rejected because in the comment section she wrote she was completing the form under duress. She then resubmitted the information, leaving the comment section blank.

Now Bellan is worried that her personal information may be leaked.

"I think that this is a great concern, not only to us, but to the entire nation," she said. "I hope more thought is given to this issue and finally, at the highest level, people are going to see it the way we do."

Apache to Add Gas Fuelling Dispensers at Stripes Stores

Stripes LLC, a subsidiary of Susser Holdings Corporation announced it is partnering with Apache Corporation to add natural gas fueling dispensers at selected Stripes? convenience store locations.

Initially, compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling capability will be available at two Stripes locations in the Midland, Texas area.

Steve DeSutter, Stripes President and CEO ? Retail, said, ?Adding natural gas to our conventional motor fuel products reinforces our mission to give Stripes customers what they want at a great price in our convenient store locations.

?We certainly see the role of natural gas in our energy future, and we are looking forward to participating as it evolves as a viable alternative transportation fuel. We plan to evaluate the results of our pilot project in West Texas, and if it is successful, we expect to gradually roll out CNG fueling capabilities in other Stripes markets,? DeSutter said.

Steve Farris, Apache?s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said: ?Natural gas discovered and produced in the United States is a smart alternative to conventional fuels. It?s cheaper, cleaner, and abundant.

?We use it for our fleet cars and trucks with great results, lowering operating costs and reducing our environmental footprint. Partnering with Stripes provides our fleet and other CNG users with a more convenient fueling experience as well as access to their stores and other amenities.?

Today compressed natural gas is priced 30% to 40% lower than gasoline or diesel on a gallonequivalent basis, which means a big savings at the pump. According to industry experts, natural gas is kinder to the environment by reducing vehicle exhaust emissions, and because of our nation?s abundant natural gas reserves, it represents a more secure American energy supply. According to the Department of Energy Clean Cities Alternative Fuel Pricing Report and the Institute of Energy Research, known domestic resources could satisfy the nation?s needs for more than 100 years.

MediaPortal posts 20 alpha and new remotes, teases 13 beta with Titan

Home theater PC owners only just recovering from their turkey or tofu comas will have some updating to do -- MediaPortal has been busy. The experimenters among us will most likely want to jump straight into the promised MediaPortal 2.0 Alpha Autumn, which carries new visual layouts and video backgrounds, a news plugin and a party-friendly music player. New versions of remote tools like aMPdroid, MPExtended, WebMediaPortal and WifiRemote bring their own slew of upgrades, such as HTTP Live Streaming in MPExtended or a "what's new" interface in aMPdroid. We'll readily admit that our eye is most drawn to the yet-to-be-launched MediaPortal 1.3 beta's addition of the Titan skin you see up above: going beyond what we saw in October, the extra-polished look goes a long way towards accommodating newcomers and the style-conscious. We're still waiting on publicly accessible 1.3 beta code, but everything else is waiting for open-source media hubs at the included links.

Study points to potential new therapies for cancer and other diseases

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

Researchers at The Scripps Research Institute (TRSI) are fueling the future of cancer treatment by improving a powerful tool in disease defense: the body's immune system. By revealing a novel but widespread cell signaling process, the scientists may have found a way to manipulate an important component of the immune system into more effectively fighting disease.

The study, recently published online ahead of print by the journal Blood, shows that disabling a particular enzyme, called ItpkB, in mice improves the function of a type of immune cell called Natural Killer cells.

"This is an exciting finding because it could possibly lead to the development of drugs that improve Natural Killer cell function," said TSRI Associate Professor Karsten Sauer, PhD, who led the study. "Natural Killer cells have gained clinical interest as innovative biological therapeutics for certain cancers and also in certain infectious diseases."

The Body's 'SWAT Team'

Natural Killer cells patrol the body and detect characteristic alterations on the surface of cancer cells or virus-infected cells. Through a complicated and little understood signaling machinery?a domino effect of molecular reactions in a cell that ultimately produces a certain signal?Natural Killer cells then destroy such "stressed" cells.

Compared to other types of immune cells, Natural Killer cells kill these cells quickly. This makes Natural Killer cells important early responders of the immune system. Not surprisingly, researchers have explored engaging this "SWAT team" of the body therapeutically, particularly in blood cancers.

However, to date, the therapeutic efficacy of Natural Killer cells has been limited. "A key bottleneck is our limited understanding of signaling mechanisms that dampen Natural Killer cell function," Sauer said.

Sauer and colleagues' new research reveals crucial details of this puzzle.

A Way to Prime the Attack

The Sauer group had previously identified ItpkB as a key regulator of immune function. ItpkB acts primarily by producing IP4, a small molecule messenger that controls the functions of various other important signaling molecules. IP4 can improve or inhibit signaling depending on the cell type in which it is produced.

The new research showed that Natural Killer cells from mice lacking ItpkB show elevated signaling and function better than Natural Killer cells that have the enzyme. As a result, mice lacking ItpkB are more effective than mice expressing ItpkB in attacking cells that display characteristic surface changes of cancer cells.

"The enzyme ItpkB has unique features that facilitate its highly specific inhibition by small molecules," said Sauer. "Our findings suggest that such compounds could possibly be used to improve Natural Killer cell function therapeutically. If successful, this could overcome a bottleneck and engage the body's SWAT team to fight cancer."

Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean binaries added to AOSP

Android 421 Jelly Bean binaries added to AOSP

Barely a fortnight after the Android 4.2 binaries were added to the Android Open Source Project database, here comes Android 4.2.1. It appears as if the files have been uploaded for the Nexus 10, Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus (Verizon model included), but the Nexus 4 is being omitted for the time being. In short, this opens the doors for custom ROM makers to dig in and update their own wares with the latest and greatest from Google. And come December, the users of those wares will be hugely appreciative of that extra 0.1. Hit the source links to grab the newness.

November consumer confidence hits more than four-year high

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Consumer confidence rose to a four-and-a-half-year high in November as consumers became more optimistic about the outlook for the economy, according to a private sector report released on Tuesday.

The Conference Board, an industry group, said its index of consumer attitudes rose to 73.7 up from an upwardly revised 73.1 the month before, its highest since February 2008. Economists had expected a reading of 73.0, according to a Reuters poll.

October was originally reported as 72.2.

"Over the past few months, consumers have grown increasingly more upbeat about the current and expected state of the job market, and this turnaround in sentiment is helping to boost confidence," Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center, said in a statement.

The expectations index rose to 85.1 from 84.0, while the present situation index edged slightly lower to 56.6 from 56.7.

Consumers' labor market assessment was little changed in November. The "jobs hard to get" index was flat at 38.8 percent, while the "jobs plentiful" rose to 11.2 percent from 10.4 percent.

Mark Twain Coin awaiting president's signature

It has taken time.

It has taken much effort.

It has taken patience.

Now all it needs is the signature of President Barack Obama.

When that happens, the commemorative Mark Twain Coin will be minted, and the money used for purchases will go Twain sites across the country, including the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum in Hannibal, the Mark Twain House and Museum in Hartford, Conn., the Center for Mark Twain Studies at Elmira College in Elmira, N.Y., where Twain is buried, and the Mark Twain Papers & Project at the Bancroft Library of the University of California-Berkley.

"It's on the way to the president for his signature," Henry Sweets, curator of the Hannibal museum said. "Some questions were raised about the language (of the bill) and it had to go back. The changes had to be approved by both the House and the Senate, and that's what was done."

No tax dollars will be used to produce the coins, which are expected to be ready in 2016.?
