Toronto Mayor Rob Ford says he needs at least another term in office to complete his ?respect for taxpayers? agenda.
Calling in to his Sunday program on Newstalk 1010, which his brother Doug and fellow Toronto Councillor Francis Nunziata hosted while the mayor was at the Santa Claus parade, Ford insisted his administration has been able to turn the city around.
?We?ve still got a lot of work to do,? Ford said. ?Obviously, we can?t do it in the next two years (the remainder of the current four-year term). I?m going to need at least another four to six years to complete the work, and we?ll take it from there.?
Doug said he believes they deserve an ?A-double-plus? for changing the city?s fiscal framework, arguing the city is spending less this year than last, unlike provincial and federal levels of government.
The Toronto Taxpayers Coalition gave the mayor a ?B? and his brother Doug a ?B-plus? for their work on city council this year.
Coalition President Matthew McGuire, who was on the Ford brothers program Sunday, said the mayor has turned in a solid performance on behalf of taxpayers but needs to stay focused on the job.
?Don?t get involved in any sort of personal sniping back and forth,? McGuire said in an interview on Newstalk 1010. ?And find coalitions among councillors who are willing to work on a specific issue.?
Ford has been embroiled in one controversy after another, and was in court last Friday defending himself from allegations that he defamed a businessman while criticizing a controversial restaurant contract with the city.
While the court case was in full swing, NDP MP Olivia Chow said she has been approached repeatedly to run for Mayor of Toronto in 2014.
?Well, he was democratically elected about two years ago ... he is who he is,? Chow said when asked what she thought of the current mayor.
Doug defended his brother as someone who is passionate about helping people.
?Rob Ford is a workaholic,? Doug said. ?He?s not the typical mayor. He goes to people?s houses. He returns phone calls.?
